Grand Canyon Helicopters: 5 Reasons to RSVP

One of several common questions I get from travelers is, "Should I secure my Grand Canyon helicopter flight upfront?" My response is always a booming "Yes." As well as the fact that demand for these trips exceeds supply, listed here are five more good reasons to lock in your seats at the earliest opportunity:

Sunrise and sunset flights are often overbooked. This is when the canyon really comes to life, and travelers who have done their homework know this. Cancellations are uncommon, especially during the summer season (high season).

Morning flights are the most enjoyable and offer the utmost flexibility. The air is smoother in the a.m. and visibility is at its best. Canyon weather is fickle; if there's a re-scheduling, those on top of the queue fly first.

Choppers hold only six people. This limits the supply of seats. Further, these aircraft require a proper distribution of weight - a individual weighing between 275 and 300 pounds may be required to purchase two seats.

Days are shorter in fall and winter. This impacts the overall number of flights available. Moreover, this is "low" season, a time when tour companies lower the number of flights they run.

It's less costly. Book on the internet in advance and you will save a tremendous wad of cash compared to the retail/rack rate with which you'll get slammed IF you successfully get a same-day flight at the heliport.

The principle of making a reservation for your Grand Canyon helicopter tour in advance applies whether you depart from Vegas or the South Rim. For Vegas travelers, helicopter tours only visit the West Rim and the Las Vegas Strip. To do the South Rim, you will need to take a 45-minute airplane journey and transfer to a helicopter.

West Rim tours include:

Landing at the base. Fly down 4,000 feet to the base. Deplane and check out the primordial floor. Champagne toast included. Upgrade to include a no-rapids raft ride.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk. Land at Grand Canyon West. Access the "glass bridge," a miraculous structure that dangles 70 feet over the edge and lifts you 4,000 over the Colorado River.

Classic air tour. Fly over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, a Joshua Tree forest, and the Mojave Desert. U-turn over the Grand Canyon West. Upgrade to include a Vegas Strip flyover.

South Rim trips, which depart from Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan, AZ, situated just outside the gates of the National Park, fly over the Kaibab Plateau and into the Dragoon Corridor before going back at the North Rim. For the ultimate flight, upgrade to an EcoStar 130.

Grand Canyon helicopter tours are incredibly popular with visitors to Las Vegas and Arizona. To enjoy this aerial joyride, I recommend you get your trip upfront. Seats are in short supply, especially during sunrise and sunset flights. The great thing is getting to the start of the line has never been simpler. Just log on to Web and RSVP. Then kick back and enjoy the Grand Canyon the way it was supposed to be experienced. From the air!

Salvador - Bahia

Forget about the perfect sync of nature and urban life of Rio de Janeiro and all the exuberance of Amazon forest or Iguaçu Falls. Although all these locations are magnificent, Bahia is by far my favorite destination in Brazil.

That is where I have an urge to spend at least one week per year, just to remember how simple life can be perfect. No TV, no internet, no mobile, no watches. Hold on, if you are a geek and got scared after reading this, do not worry: it does not mean that you must disconnect from the world if you do not want to. But, honestly, these hight tech stress gigs just do not fit into Bahia's lifestyle.

Exquisite food, good music, wonderful people, cozy small hotels, white sand, blue sea, palm trees and semi-desert beaches. Not to mention great New Year's Eve parties. I have already spend three NYE in Bahia and all of them were memorable. It doesn't matter if you are into axé music (local music), electronic music or no music, you will find your party in Bahia.

My first trip to Bahia was in 2007 to Morro de Sao Paulo, which is 2 hours by boat from Salvador, the capital of the state. Cool island, full of Europeans, especially Italians. And the last trip happened pretty recently, last December when I went to Troncoso, which is 1 hour driving from the closest airport in Porto Seguro. Trancoso is the hype destination of the moment with its expensive and luxurious hotels, restaurants and clubs branches from Sao Paulo. Both have their charm and I would definitely come back to either of them.

However, one the most interesting places in the south of Bahia is Barra Grande. Kind of undiscovered by the tourists, this small village located at Peninsula do Marau, is somehow still a little bit isolated from all the touristic mainstream. This small fishermen village unfolds beautiful desert beaches, cozy family hotels and the best octopus risotto I've ever ate in my life. Don't miss Tapera Restaurant, even if it takes them 2 hours to bring your order. It is food from the Gods. This is Bahia, in the purest state as it can be, so time is something you should not really bother. And also do not wait for any sophisticated infrastructure. But who cares about wi-fi when you see a gorgeous sunset from Bar do Alemão. Or how stressed can you get because your Blackberry does not have a single bar when you are just chilling out with friends at a white sand beach under the shadow of a palm tree?

I still had the privilege to fly over the whole peninsula by helicopter. One of those unexpected and unforgettable experiences that happen once in a lifetime. Don't miss it if you eventually have a friend that happens to own a helicopter.

Still, if you are lucky enough to be there by December, do not miss any Beach Club party, specially the New Year's Eve one. It is magical to be in a paradisiacal beach, wearing white clothes, enjoying good music, drinking champagne and waiting for the sunrise of the new year. When I think back about all of these, I have to agree with a friend who said that none antidepressant ever discovered by science is as powerful as a good week spent in Bahia.

The Honduran Bay Islands

Contrary to nearby Guatemala, Honduras is just not best-known for their textiles. Although, it truly is earning a reputable name for its wood carvings. Anyone could also buy jewelry, sculptures along with many other carvings built by regional artists. Masterfully stiched baskets usually are offered across the country. Anyone can also obtain Honduran cigars, which often can compete with the ones provided by Cuba in flavour along with quality. Make Yosemite Your Vacation Destination

You're getting close to that time of the year, the time when you go on a well deserved vacation. The only problem is deciding where to go. It doesn't matter what part of the world you live in, there is always a plethora of options for vacation time. I feel you really couldn't go wrong with any of the options laid out before you. But there is one place in particular that has been close to my heart that I want to tell you about… Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite National Park is a place whose beauty has inspired many great men/women like John Muir and continues to do so with each passing generation. It's natural beauty is near unparalleled and hard to put into mere words. It's a national treasure and a place that is certain to become more than a mere vacation destination in your heart.
There is truthfully no limit of what you can do and what you can see in Yosemite National Park but I will do my best to compress it for this article. For starters there are three areas that you can inside of the park itself; Yosemite Village, Curry Village and the Ahwahnee Hotel. Keep in mind that while you can drive around Yosemite you can also takes buses that go through all of Yosemite and drop you off at the main destinations.

Yosemite Village tends to cater more towards the adults although children and families are always welcome. Inside Yosemite Village there is a bike rental shop, a general store where you can purchase simple supplies and food, a few restaurant options, shopping, a bus stop, an outdoor theater, a hotel and the base of Yosemite Falls is in walking distance. You can't go wrong with any of the restaurants in all of Yosemite but one of my favorites in Yosemite Village is a place called Degnan's Loft. They serve excellent pizza, pasta, salads and a assortment of appetizers, the prices aren't bad either.

Curry Village is dedicated more towards the families and kids. It is slightly less expensive than Yosemite Village which makes it ideal for large families or a group of young adults. The lodging options for Curry Village include cabins and tents. Curry Village has a general store, a post office, and great dining options. There isn't as much offered as Yosemite Village has but that doesn't make it any less special. The Pizza Deck is my dining recommendation for Curry Village and the Curry Village Pavilion offers a vast assortment of breakfast options each morning.

The Ahwahnee Hotel has everything you need right inside the hotel itself. There is a breathtaking dining hall where all the meals take place. The dining hall is just beyond words, even if you don't stay at the Ahwahnee Hotel you need to do yourself a favor and have at least one meal in the dining hall. Remember if you chose to have dinner there formal attire is required. The hotel also sports a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, hiking paths, indoor shopping, the grand lounge, and a game area. If you don't want to stay in the hotel itself the Ahwahnee offers outdoor cabins that are equally beautiful.

Remember that whatever part of Yosemite you decide to stay in you can easily visit the other areas in a few minutes time. The park itself is a nature lover's dream. There are a number of trails to chose from, a horse riding stable, water rafting, snowboarding, bike rentals, waterfalls to view, and rocks to climb. Before you embark on any of these options you should know what your skill level is, the last thing you want to do is ruin your vacation by getting hurt. No matter what option you chose you're sure to enjoy yourself. As far as hiking trails go here are my recommendations; The Mist Trail, Lower & Upper Yosemite Falls, Mirror Lake, Inspiration Point, and Bridalveil Falls. You can't choose wrong these are simply my favorite hikes from over the years.

There is something for everyone to do and enjoy at Yosemite. It doesn't matter if you're a young child or an elder person. Yosemite is going to brighten up your spirits and change your life forever. That may sound extreme to say about a vacation but it's not. Once you go you will see how special Yosemite is and why it truly is a life changing experience.

The temple of wealth….

Built as early as 1850s the Tua Pek Kong Temple has survived a fire, miraculously as believed by the locals and to this day continues to attract visitors to witness its ancient architecture. There is an interesting legend behind the origin of the temple. It is believed that a man by the name Tua Pek Kong who while on his way to Sumatra and struck by the wind has landed in Malaysia accidently and today is worshipped by both Malaysian and the Chinese. Considered as the god of prosperity after his death, this Chinese god is believed to be associated with accumulating a lot of wealth.

The temple has undergone a few renovations to become what it is today. Its rear section was altered to build a pagoda which was built in accordance with ancient Chinese architecture. The pagoda which was reserved to worship the goddess of mercy is one of the chief attractions that draw visitors to the city with its majestic presence against the city sky line. The temple that stands alone enveloped in deep silence provides a vivid insight into the ancient Chinese's beliefs and culture. A famous ritual is annual flame watching that takes place according to the Chinese calendar on its 14th night. It is that rare occasion where the temple comes alive and aglow with the crowds pouring into partake in the ritual. There is also a fabulous seaside view to be enjoyed across the North Channel near the hotel.

While strolling through this part of China it is immensely beneficial to know a great place for residency. The Somerset Gateway is an exceptional place to take refuge in after a hectic day of exploring China. Finding a serviced apartment Kuching should not be a difficult task especially when there is this superb collection of some 70 apartments which are extremely spacious and fully furnished to match any fastidious traveller's taste. These serviced apartments in Kuching are also strategically placed to be close to everything the city has to offer, starting from the museum to the city's major shopping and entertainment centres as well as Kuching water front and TunJugaa office tower.

An introduction to New Zealand's North Island

New Zealand is an incredibly wide ranging country, a place which seems characterised by a dichotomy between Maori and European culture, between the old and the new, the rural and the metropolitan and of course, the north and the south. This amalgamation, even if at sometimes contradictory, produces one of the most unique luxury holiday experiences in the world, asserting New Zealand as one of the most consistently popular tourist destinations for families, couples and honeymooners , asserting New Zealand as one of the most consistently popular tourist destinations for families, couples and honeymooners alike.
The North Island of New Zealand is where a majority of the nation's 3 million or so residents live with the largest municipality of Auckland and the capital of Wellington both situated there. Auckland is a beautiful city, diverse and vibrant an alien urban centre that immediately feels like home. A very international coalescence of cultures and people makes a stay in Auckland an exciting and ever changing experience. Particularly worth your while is a boat trip around the harbour, the community's nickname being 'the city of the sails' due to vast number of yachts and boats that are moored around the extensive dock. North of Auckland, the Coromandel and the Bay of Islands offer visitors a more secluded and laid back experience. The Bay of Islands is regarded as one of New Zealand's most famous landmarks and as you might imagine is characterised by a myriad of small volcanic islands spread out across the North Eastern peninsula as well as the famous Ninety Mile Beach (actually closer to seventy miles).
Further south the Waitomo Caves make an excellent day excursion for the more adventurous. The deep network of caverns are navigated quite uniquely, by floating along an underground stream on rubber rings; the area is particularly famous for the glow worms that light up the roof of the caves like a starry night sky. Rotorua a well established township in the centre of the island has gained notoriety as one of the most actively geothermic communities in the world, even the slight whiff of sulphur can be noted as you approach the town and geysers, mood pools and thermal springs can be seen all around and steam can even be seen hissing out of roadside vents.
As you snake south down the island another natural feature certainly worth a visit is the vast Lake Taupo, one of the world's largest inland lakes. The nearby town of Taupo is a friendly and charming place to spend a day or two and for anyone with an iron constitution, the region is famous for its skydiving over the lake.
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and although smaller than Auckland you may argue boasts even more character and charm. Established around the eponymous Wellington Bay this pretty community enjoys an excellent boutique shopping and café culture and a particular highlight is Te Pa Pa National Museum which charts the fascinating history of this relatively young nation from the Pacific Islanders who first landed here to British colonial rule and modern day innovations.
Although I have picked out some of the more conventional and well known sights there is so much more to the North Island than just this, from the National parks and unique communities such as Napier and Hastings to the calm of Cap Reinga, the most northern point of the island. What is even more incredible is that this is only one side of New Zealand and after you have explored the glories that this place has to offer there is another island to the south filled with even more wonder and beauty.

Historic SoHo in New York City

So named for its location (South of Houston , the New York City neighborhood referred to as SoHo has a rich and eventful history that belies its current status as the premier high fashion and arts district of downtown Manhattan.

Beginning as farmland, downtown Manhattan quickly grew after the English bought the island from the Dutch in the 1600s, leading to the construction of many taverns, brothels and hotels thorughout the early part of the 19th century. From its early cultural prominence in the mid-1800s, the area of SoHo became primarily home to manufacturing plants and sweatshops of cast iron construction towards the turn of the 20th century. The growth of uptown sapped the neighborhood of vitality, leaving behind abandoned structures little to no indigenous culture and raw industrial space most would consider uninhabitable. In the mid-1960s, an ill-fated campaign by then-mayor John Lindsay to turn the neighborhood into a thoroughfare (the Lower Manhattan Expressway, or LoMex) failed due to local activism in the name of cultural and historical preservation of the buildings in the area, which were constructed with cast-iron support columns and facades and representing the largest collection of such structures in the world. This led to the middle era in SoHo's exciting history, in which artists took the neighborhood (and its improvement) into their own hands.

After the prospective highway plan was thrown out, many of the remaining historically important buildings remained nearly (some completely) unoccupied. Unlike the brownstones common in other areas of New York, SoHo had previously been a manufacturing district and thus fulfilled the requirements for many artists, who began to move into the neighborhood throughout the 1960's and 70's. High ceilings, large windows with abundant natural light, and extremely cheap rent all contributed to the influx of artists, who began to organize over this period to petition the city to rezone SoHo as a quasi-residential area. Many of the inhabitants converted their spaces from previously unlivable raw manufacturing space into live-work loft spaces without any protection under the law. In 1971 the area was rezoned, following active lobbying by residents requesting legal recognition of their improvements to the buildings, leading to increased occupancy and an explosion of the local art scene. Over time, the neighborhood became renowned for its forward-thinking artistic contributions, ranging from pop-up galleries to special events.

However, SoHo's transformation was not yet complete. The noticeable improvement of the neighborhood through artists and their cultural expansion eventually led to improved economic conditions and gentrification, leading to the coining of the term "the SoHo effect" that has been used to describe this process in other neighborhoods and cities across the US. As NYC generally and specifically downtown improved, the rising property taxes meant that the cheap rents that had initally attracted the avant-garde to SoHo eventually displaced many of them, leading to their seeking out cheaper areas (which would often suffer similar fates). Now SoHo is one of the most popular districts in Manhattan for shopping, apparel, walking tours and other tourist attractions in addition to events and exhibitions that are still held in the neighborhood. While many artists remain in the upper stories, high-end boutiques and fashionable clothing stores have come to replace many of the art galleries, most of which have moved northwest into Chelsea. Now some of the most expensive downtown real estate, SoHo still has a few exceptional large exhibition spaces, which often host events ranging from runway shows by the most prestigious fashion labels to large corporate events, food and wine tastings, photography shoots, and trade shows that draw enthusiasts from all over the city and worldwide.
With its exceptional location and beautifully preserved architecture, there are few areas in New York that represent the city's endless capacity for renewal and remembrance of its humble beginnings so well.

Discovering Cleopatra on Egypt Holidays

Although she died over two thousand years ago, the name of Cleopatra lives on, worldwide. None more so than in the land she adopted. Visitors on Egypt holidays are confused at the number of attractions that bear her name, like the Cleopatra Pool in the Siwa Oasis or the Cleopatra Bath at Mersa Matruh, which have no connection with her whatsoever. The name itself conjures up images of beauty and refinement. So who was this enigmatic woman, known for her beauty and by everyone, for seducing Roman generals and shaping the history of Egypt so dramatically?

Cleopatra was not Egyptian by birth. She was born in Alexandria in 69 BC and was the third daughter of Ptolemy Xll. He was much hated by the Egyptians, so much so, that he sought sanctuary in Rome for several years. When her father died in 51 BC, Cleopatra ruled with her brother, Ptolemy Xlll, whom she married, as was the custom at the time. She was 17. Her brother wanted to rule alone and sent her into exile. At the time she ascended to the throne, the Ptolemics strength was weakening, whilst the Roman Empire was growing in strength.

Tributes had to be paid to Rome to keep them out of Egypt. Cleopatra decided to enlist the help of Rome by promising herself to Caesar, wrapped in a carpet, if he got rid of her brother/ husband. Such was the allure of Cleopatra that Caesar had him killed, and Cleopatra and Caesar became lovers. In 47 BC, Cleopatra dutifully married the next brother in line, 11 year old Ptolemy XIV, but straight after the ceremony, she went on a cruise with Caesar. The union of the two lovers would have made Egypt a world power, ruled jointly by Caesar and Cleopatra. Republicans in the Senate were worried about this and decided to have Caesar killed, knifed by conspirators, led by Brutus on the steps of the Senate on the infamous Ides of March.

After the assassination, Cleopatra took a Roman general, Marc Antony as her lover. She needed an ally to save her from the rightful heir, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, later known as Augustus, who hated her. With Marc Antony, she had three children. Augustus's forces clashed with a rebel army led by Marc Antony at the Battle of Actium and vanquished them. Marc Antony committed suicide and Cleopatra followed him on August 12th, 30 BC by killing herself with an asp bite. Many tourists on Luxor holidays believe that she is buried in the Valley of the Queens but she is buried next to Marc Antony in a mausoleum in Alexandria.

Throughout history, many have told the tale of Cleopatra. Even Shakespeare immortalised her in the play 'Anthony and Cleopatra'. Jules Massenet wrote an opera about her life, Cleopatre and in 1963, a film was made starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It was the highest grossing film of the year and yet still made a loss of $18 million dollars as it was so expensive to make. There were plans for two films to be made 'Caesar and Cleopatra' and 'Antony and Cleopatra' but these were later modified to make just the one film, which itself went way over budget. Tourists on Egypt holidays can do a Cleopatra Tour, where they learn of her turbulent life and take in the sites of Egypt, having connections with the Egyptian Queen. There is also an exhibition in Philadelphia 'Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt' which has some very interesting artefacts.
